UCSD Business Safety Outreach

The Business Safety Outreach Project is a group of UCSD-affiliated students, staff, and volunteers who are helping small businesses interpret the new recommendations and requirements to open safely during the coronavirus pandemic.

backround

Businesses around the country have faced immense financial hardship and unprecedented disruptions. As stay-at-home orders lift and non-essential businesses reopen, they must maintain a safe place of business for staff, consumers, and the general public. Keeping businesses safe will help keep businesses open and the San Diego community healthy.

Multiple national, state, and local agencies have published guidelines and recommendations for safe re-opening. We have heard from many businesses that they are confused – and it is confusing! In San Diego County, almost 60% are small businesses with <100 employees – most of which cannot afford a public health consultant to help.

Common questions include:

  • Which guidelines are required? Which are just recommended?

  • What do I do if I am sick? What do I do if my co-worker or employee is sick?

  • What if I don’t have health insurance or sick leave?

  • Where can I get flyers to put up for the public or my employees?

  • Where can I find help?

about the project

Our team members are available to talk to you about the guidelines and requirements surrounding your business during the coronavirus pandemic. We understand that different businesses have different needs, and different questions.

We offer consultations in-person, by phone, or by video conference.  We will discuss the resources in the Small Business Safe Reopening Toolkit and make sure you are aware of other important resources for small businesses

The Small Business Safe Reopening Toolkit contains:

  • Information about coronavirus;

  • Why you should care about workplace safety;

  • Tips for how to keep your workplace safe;

  • CDC, state, and county guidelines, with sample checklists to review your business’s compliance

  • Sample documents, fliers and other signage;

  • Links to additional resources.

Team members are also available to speak to you and/or your employees to talk about coronavirus and answer general questions.
The program will adapt as needed, both responding to the needs of the community as well as changes in the pandemic.
